El primer fin de semana de mayo se celebran las fiestas en honor al Santo Cristo de la Banda Verde, que en nada se parece al ritual religioso con que esta fecha se conmemora en los demás pueblos de la provincia. En Almachar esta fiesta se celebra en honor del Santo Cristo de la Banda Verde, al que los almachareños pidieron protección durante la ola de terremotos que sacudió la zona a mediados del siglo XVIII. Como quiera que ninguno de ellos pereció como consecuencia de los movimientos sísmicos y las casas del pueblo apenas sufrieron daño, por aclamación popular se nombró a este Cristo protector de la villa. Aparte de la función religiosa, que incluye misa y procesión de la imagen por las calles más céntricas, durante todo el fin de semana se suceden distintas actuaciones musicales, bailes, fuegos artificiales, pruebas deportivas y verbenas populares.
